I have the Charlton guide which helped me to understand what P meant, plated-steel, but I can't determine why some pennies have RCM and some have nothing at all. Perhaps this is obvious to Canadians? The guide book shows (nothing) and RCM roll (50). What is the comparative rarity of each? Thanks! Report this Post to the Staff

Topher Pillar of the Community Canada 965 Posts	Posted 07/31/2007 3:14 pm Depends on the year. In 2000, the RCM started making the pennies out of plates steel. (There were some minted in 1999, if I remember correctly, but not released into circulation.) Since then, they have made both 'P' and 'no-P' for each year. The 2000P is pretty rare, but otherwise, there are plenty of both for each year. In 2006, the RCM started using the RCM logo as a mintmark instead of the 'P' mintmark, but some coins can be found with 'P', 'no-P', and ' RCM logo' mintmarks. (Not sure about the penny, but I know the nickel comes in all 3 varieties.) The plan is to retire the 'P' mintmark in favour of the logo. Hope my rambling is enough of an explanation.
