I just found this auction this evening. It is a 1864 L that has an unattributed (quite obvious) RPD. However, the whole obverse looks "grainy" like from a sandcast or old corrosion. The reverse looks perfectly fine. Any ideas on why the obverse looks corroded?

badly corroded obverse, probably environmental damage from being in the ground.

It looks genuine, just badly corroded.
