If your on the WINS list then you already know my experience today. It was a bit more than what I posted, but I am sure you got the idea.
For those of you not on the WINS list, I will keep it short and sweet. I call a local dealer to inquire about proper storage material for the time being. I told him that I had just received a collection and needed to try the best I could to protect it from the elements. He immediately ask if the collection is for sale (mind you, I haven't told him AT ALL what I have). Once I tell him no, that was the beginning of the end. He became short and wanted to get off the phone.
Well, I arrive at the store and the two men behind the counter never even acknowledge me being there until I introduced myself as being a recent caller. Did they ask if I needed assistance? NO!!! Did they move from behind the counter to assit me? Not a chance. Infact, I am shocked to see coins landing by my feet. He is pulling coins from 2x2s and throwing them into this sorta grab bag in the center of the store. He is missing and they are landing next to me. How rude!!!
Well, I want to keep this short. I understand that people need to make a living. However, I am that one customer that you don't want to upset. So....my money will go somewhere else. I am sure there has to be a local dealer that wants to both earn a living as well as keep a return customer.

As one who visits lots of shops around the nation, I can tell you first hand that this is not a new story. I have even called ahead to make sure that I am greeted, and still get the rude attention. Do not let this ruin your day though, as not all of us are bothered by customers. Some of us actually appreciate the fact that someone wants to spend their money with us. Some of these brain children think that they have the ability to judge a person by their appearance. Well I have learned that some of the richest people look as if they did not have two nickels to rub together. In my humble opinion there is never a reason to be rude. While busy I can understand, and even forgetfulness, rudeness will surely get you out of my book quickly. Do me a favor, drop me an email with the name of this dealer. I would love to add this to my "Do Not Visit" list.
I don't know if I missed your storage question here on the forum, but if you would like some suggestions, I would gladly give you my opinion. I recommend Airtites for most coins as they are easy to use and cheap enough. For more valuable material, Intercept is the way to go. Their boxes and holders are by far and away the best.

I won't let it ruin my day. Not all of it anyway. I guess I should have brought the bright red corvette, or gone down the street and borrowed one of my friends Dodge Vipers...instead of my gas friendly Nissan Frontier. That would have made me look more serious? Their loss indeed!!! I was very excited about being there and could have spent a good deal of time looking over it all (not a big store), then started taking notes on what to research then come back and make purchases.
I was given an email by a member here with a contact he made. I will call that person right now and ask for his opinion on where to go next.

I sent an email, but if you do not get it, let me know.
I know that Kissimee is about an hour away, but I highly recommend Tradernick. He is a member here, and I have personally delt with him a few times. A gold star in my book.

Reminds me of a story. A car dealer that I worked for long ago had a "Fred Sanford" that stopped every day with the rattiest looking truck you had ever seen. He would pull up next to the company dumpster and jump into the dumpster directly from the truck. He would rummage through the whole dumpster (yesterdays lunch and all) throwing all the scrap metal into the back of the truck. This was the most smelly and poorly dressed person I think Ive ever seen. Well, after about a year of this, I went out to dinner to a very ritzy place. Upon leaving, a less than 2 year old Jag pulled up to the valet. Guess who got out, yup, "Fred Sanford". His suit was probably woth more than most people make in a week. His wife's jewelry was probably worth more than most make in 5 years. Ya just never know.

believe me it doesn't matter. Some people just have no idea what a value a customer is. There are a few here that can tell you that I am a very serious buyer of coins, and I still get the bad service at some shops. Some are happy with their normal day to day business and really just don't care. Anyways, keep visiting shops until you find one you like. Develope a good relationship with the dealer and you will both benefit.

Over in Northern Virginia there are two major shopping malls called Tyson's Corner. The developer walked the property each morning as these malls were being built picking up scraps. He told the onlookers that old habits die hard. In 1980 he was one of the richest men in the world. I have a few clients that would be turned away at the local McDonald's for their manner of dress or the trucks that they drive, yet each could buy and sell the store many times over and never miss the money.

It's a shame when a dealer forgets what it was like to be collector. One of the things I like about being a dealer is that I have a lot more information to share. In my opinion, a dealer who isn't interested in sharing info about the hobby with a customer, has no business being a dealer (and is definitely not one I would want to do business with). Hang in there, Jayson. You will find a good shop.

I been to that store. It was okay for me. I picked up a nice MS Buffalo nickel for my 20th Century Type set awhile back. There is another shop on North Armenia (not to far away) that you may wish to try. Also, on the way to Clearwater on Gulf-to-Bay (Route 60), check out Hauser's Coins. They have two shops, one in Clearwater and one in Lakeland. They usually have nice stuff, but they will not "bargain" with you. Their Lakeland store always seems to have some nice Lincolns. Drop me a PM, I travel the state and I usually keep track of the decent stores around the state. it is what I do on my lunch hour. Ed

I had a similar experience (not near as bad) at my first trip to a coin store. That is what drove me to ebay and online dealers my first couple of years. And probably why I still prefer to deal with online dealers and collectors as opposed to shops. I have had good experiences at shows, though.

Almost everywhere I go, I dress casual and comfortable. Only the fact that I am married keeps me from ending up dressing slobby and tattered. I am not a rich guy but I certainly have more money than my appearance would suggest. I am also often a 'spurty' buyer, and when I go to buy, I usually have a good portion of my coin budget saved up for the occasion.

Please don't let this first experience ruin your fun with coins. Especially if you find out from others that they were treated like gold at the shop and you feel like it's only happened to you. It's happened to most if not all of us. Two dealers ignored me at two different shows. I was ignored while sitting at their tables. No one else was at their tables but me and them! Talk about feeling uncomfortable. The first time I got up and went 2 tables and sat down at Judy Kagin's table and got treated like gold! Day and night within 20 seconds. The exact same thing the second time. Just different dealers. Other people can't say enough good about these 2 dealers. My door is slammed to them. And the dealers that I think are coin gods are slammed unmercifully by others. There are plenty of dealers who will be happy to work with you AND do it honestly. Now this part is fun: I ran what happened to me past a dealer I'm friends with at the St. Louis show where the second time occurred. He kind of chuckled and said that happens quite a bit at shows and a lot dealers love it! Fifty percent of the time the person who gets slighted will stop at another table and spend twice as much as they planned just out of spite and still P.O.ed! I will say this. I spent money when I sat down at Judy Kagin's table and plan on spending more at the SF ANA show! Jerry
