Hello. I recently found this beauty and would like the experts opinion on it, and if it is authentic ect ect...
Alexander III (The Great) Drachm
Struck-310-301 BCE
Weight-4.05g
Mint-Abydos(Capadocia)
VF

Basileus-Alexander
I try to reason with myself on buying this by saying " I'm sure Julius or Augustus had one of these "
P.S This would be my first true Greek coin .
Thank you all very much.

It looks fine to me. Nice coin for your first Greek.

Looks fine to me too ........ but take that for what it's worth !

I hope we don't end up with another Balkan war over the nationality of this coin.

The fact that it is a "drachm" rather settles the issue ..........
Whether the King is Macedonian , Albanian or 'Hellene' !

My own first ancient was a drachm of Alex
I have it around here somewhere

What a world . I found another drachm for the same price and sadly I cannot have them both. Any help would be welcomed.

If it was me, I would buy the first drachm you pictured.
That is despite the fact that it has a less complete legend.
Slightly better style and surface texture.

Unfortunately, I do not have a reference to check for the mints for these; comparative rarity according to the mint could have an influence on your decision.

The second one has an interesting amphora/vessel upon its reverse. I have only read about the vessels carried by Vestal virgins during rituals at the temple. It was forbidden for water to be stored at the Temple...and that used during sacrifices had to be fresh from a spring. So for that reason, they used vessels called 'futiles' with a narrow base that made it impossible to stand them on the ground. Futile literally meant 'that which easily pours out'. Not sure if a similar discipline existed at temples of the Greek equivalent, Hestia. Not sure either if the vessel on that coin is meant to be a 'futile' type of thing, but it reminds me of them...

Agree with 'sel_69l', while both are nice coins the first one seems to have a better surface texture judging by the pictures.

I would pick the second one, much more attractive in my opinion. especially because the flan on the first one seems to small and the image is kind of spilling off. Not so in the second one. Also I like vessel mintmark.

I'd prefer the second one. Centering is important to me.
