Hi I do not know much about ancient coin. I got the coin from a relative and I hope that you guys could tell me something about it. I know that there are a lot of ancient coins on the marked and the coin is probably not worth much, but I hope that it at least isn't fake. It is quite cool if someone has held this coin like 2000 years ago :).  *** Edited by Staff to add images to post. *** |

 to the community Depending on the size an weight this piece is supposed to be either a AR (silver) Tetradrachm or a dekadrachm Sicily. If it's real which IMO is doubtful it would most likely be the tetradrahm. There are others here that know more about this type than I do, I'm sure they will be along shortly to check it out. |

Welcome.
Not sure if the edge isn't showing a seam, which would be a bad thing. Any chance you can post the size in mm and the weight in grams? If you only have the kitchen scales, that will do as an approximation.

I tested a couple of times and it vary from 14 to 16g

If the coin is real it is a valuable coin so it is worth researching. Would need better photos of the edges to check for a seam or file marks.

Lorens, in the original post, bottom picture of the edge, on the left hand side there is a dark mark which might be a seam. It is hard to tell. Can you post other pictures of the edge?

We don't really need photos of the edge. It is certainly a modern reproduction.

I think there is a possibility that it might be plated. The edge does look as though there is bronze showing through, and on the obverse, left hand side near the edge, there seems to be bronze there also. Difficult to tell from pictures.

Greetings Lorens! Please read my disclaimer, but - I am 99.9% certain this coin is a fake. The 0.1% is down to the possibility that I am suffering a moment's profound stupidity. Which in all honesty might be slightly higher than 0.1%, but nonetheless. The style of the design and shape of the flan do not look genuine to me, but the clincher is the weight and diameter. It has a weight lighter than a tetradrachm, which should be 17.15g, give or take, but a diameter of a decadrachm. This makes it impossibly thin. I suspect it can't really qualify as a counterfeit...more a replica or tourist piece....given its divergence from an original. I am NOT any kind of expert, but if I am correct then I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If I am wrong, then sorry for seeming so certain about something which I am no expert. EDIT: Oops. Where is FR when you need him, he can spot a fake at a thousand paces :)
I tend to agree with VC, although I am no expert either. Even if it is fake, I would be happy to own it as an interesting curiosity. Don't be tempted to clean it. If I were you, I would keep it as a "lucky" piece. I don't suppose your relative can give you any extra information?
