Before I go on...I just want to say that I can't say enough about our men and women that are fighting the worst scum on earth so that we don't have to fight them on our soil.

This is bothering me. Jessica Lynch gets captured during the first days of the war in Iraq. Her unit makes a wrong turn in the desert and pays for it. She's also gets wounded and I can't imagine what the terrorist scum put her through during her captivity. We may never know.

Fortunately, an Iraqi national blows the whistle on her whereabouts and US Special Forces execute a flawless rescue.

Now she is hocking her name on everything from books to PCGS signed coins like this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...7959480&rd=1

If anybody that deserves a coin are the men and woman that execute their missions...the very ones who saved her, the very ones that may lose their lives with each room they enter.

If all of the money is going to charity, then I will shut up, but I can't help but think this is tacky...even wrong.

Is it just me? Would you buy this?
Rest in Peace

It's a sad fact Ed but our society runs on the dollar. The only way to stop this is to not buy it.

Catman hit the nail on the head! I also would like to point out that I have been REAMED twice on the Coin Talk forum, (private mail of course) in the last 3 weeks, by the moderators who have placed themselves as GODS of the FORUM. One on my posts, which was so terrible, was left and still can be read but the other was deleted immediately because I dared to share the name of a book everyone probably should read. It would explain, in my humble opinion, why we are much safer putting our hard earned money into gold and silver and THAT WAS WRONG? This is now OFFICIALLY my new home!!! I find more freedom of thought and expression here! I know this is about coins and collecting but it is also about the "WHO'S and WHY", we collect and offering each other tid bits of information that just may save us a buck or two or pointing a new direction and offering reasons why is NOT political! We all have opinions about everything and sharing those views could really make a difference in how I/we do things down the road.

In looking back on my life it seems it is always the self appointed, self righteous who want to run (or ruin) things who are demanding that I/we live out lives just like theirs that have always CAUSED ME PROBLEMS! They are the narrow-minded who can not, for a minute, see or understand the views of others as they are so blinded by their own! Kind of like not seeing the forest for the trees?
Am I angry? NO! I feel sorry for these people who are so afraid to leave their little world to explore the REAL world around them. They have no idea what they are missing!!! I am just so thankful I have been given the ability to SEE both sides of an issue as it has made me a much wiser individual who also has the ability to actually let the brain kick in before the mouth does!!!

When a person reduces themselves to this level, it shames all of us. Unfortunately our society could care less about what is good and right.

If it was me, I would want to talk to the folks at PCGS and ask, "What in the world are your thinking? If you want somebody to sign a coin, you should of slabbed coins with the signatures of the special forces that saved her! Jessica Lynch is being hailed because her unit made a wrong turn?...what about those soldiers that execute their missions flawlessly?"

I understand about shipwreck coins and certified coins that link to a specific time, place and historical significance...but what does a coin have to do with Jessica Lynch?

Anyways...I have been red marked anough on Coin Talk, most recently for blasting all presidents on potential dollar coins. It was deemed too political. I guess if I questioned Jessica's Lynch's motives, I may have gotten booted too!

I have had my fill of the private emails from Coin Talk Moderators (gods) who are apparently protecting their agenda? What ever that may be?
As for this matter, well PCGS is letting their "GREED" shine for all to see. They have developed a "No matter what it takes to make easy money" attitude. All they need now is a little media hype, which they or a big national dealer can falsly create, and the money will roll in from unsuspecting NEW collectors and those who have never collected a thing but are filled with patriotic fever right now! Really sad what some business's will stoop to for the almighty dollar. Now do I need another reason NOT to do business with PCGS?
Rest in Peace

I moved over from Coin Talk also. They have too many chiefs. You are always worried if your going to offend one of them.

The "greed" of PCGS has made it's way to QVC. This morning's airing of their coin show featured several autographed coin collections including : designers, presidents, Lynch, Appolo astronauts, and a former mint engraver.

As far as the other forum goes, let's try not to bash them too much. I for one and very thankful to find a home that welcomes my thoughts and allows me to contribute what little I know.

I am saddened to see such division amongst many great contributors in these forums. While it is unlikely that there will ever be 1 forum that appeals to EVERYbody, we must look at the bigger picture. To say "I'll never go there" or "I'm done with them" would do a great disservice to the hobby in general. There is much information to be gleaned from many sources, it would be a shame to limit those sources and in turn limit our own knowledge. While there are many sites that I visit frequently, there are relatively few that I post to. Mainly because they have a tendency to get a bit dramatic IMO. However, there is still knowledge to be gained and shared from these places. I'm confident that the intention of the mods on the other board is to simply keep things from progressing to the point of other less-than-friendly sites that will remain unnamed...but we all know what they are. Some actions may be perceived as a bit overzealous, but are only done with the intention of preserving the overall peacefulness of the boards. To nip it in the bud, if you will.

This hobby has brought many wonderful people into my life, as I'm sure it has done the same for many of you. Please, let's all focus on the camaraderie we share without drawing lines in the sand.

joesmom, While I respect your opinion and do agree with you I find great fault in those who have nothing better to do than look for fault in others or their opinions. I have played the coin game for many many years and have helped numerous other collectors get started. I have shared and traded with folks all over the world and continue to do so! Spending time any where or on any forum with those who seem to think they put their pants on differently than I do is both an insult to my intelligence and my pride. I have know some of these fine forum folks for years now and trust their advice and respect their opinions, even if it differs from mine! I do not know whether some of these folks, including you, have collected for 3 days or 30 years so I am just a little hesitant to take any crap off of a total stranger when I don't have to. It is quite apparent there are many on the CT forum who are in it for the MONEY and perhaps a lively hood and should that be the case I would suspect they are the rude, uncooperative dealers we are reading about all the time in letters to the editors in all the major magazines. They must understand this hobby, regardless of why we are in it or how long we stay, is our time and our hard earned money! There is always somewhere else one can spend time and their money and believe me when I say LIFE IS SHORT so why spend a second of it with those who have some sort of attitude problem? The old saying "Birds of a feather flock together" seems to come to mind here and that is what will always end up at any particular meeting or, in this case, forum. Give it a little time and see just how many birds fly the coop! The world of coin collecting is MY world of pleasure and relaxation and I refuse to let anyone spoil that for me. There are some really good people at CT but there are some that don't deserve to be in any position of authority and until that is taken care of there will be many more leave the nest! That my friend is a fact!

Sure sounds like me

Oh yeah, that wasn't supposed to be a good thing was it? There are places for all to gather. Some like the "Hard edged sites", "Chit-Chat", "Strictly Educational", and some like a combination. We all have our reasons for joining and participating in one place or another.

To each their own.

ND, YOU KNOW I WASN'T REFERRING TO YOU!!! One reads constantly about dealers, especially at shows, who have no time for the little guy and I was making reference to those type of individuals. I don't have time or energy to waste in a bad situation or atmosphere and will not do so. I have the right to pick my friends and where I hang out and that is exactly why I am here! One other observation I might make after watching through the years is the fact that most of these hard nose individuals reside in generally the same areas or states. Must be the air quality or something?

I for one am not going to pay any more for a coin that has a signed holder. I collect coins not peoples names.

Terry, I am truly sorry that you feel that way. My post was in no way meant to ruffle feathers any more than they already had been, only to try and keep the peace. Sometimes it can be hard to get the true meaning someone is trying to convey through mere words, tone and inflection can be lost in a keyboard. All I was hoping for is that none of us cast judgement on anyone else...the whole glass houses thing comes to mind. I'm sure it was no one's intention to purposely step on yours or anyone's toes.

I have been collecting for a period of time somewhere in between the parameters you listed, I am not a dealer, I am not an investor...simply a collector that enjoys the beauty of this hobby that is found in both the coins and people that I encounter along the way. Those that I respect, I read their posts and take their advice...those that I think are full of crap, I just ignore. Life is just too short to bother getting so worked up over typed words and misinterpreted intentions.

Again, I apologize if I said anything to upset you. I was only hoping to try to keep some sort of peace. I guess from now on I'll keep my mouth shut and my eyes and ears open. My Mom always said I'd learn a lot more that way

joesmom,

You haven't said a single word that has upset me! While I agree we all have varying opinions and we have a right to disagree I can't understand why I, or any one else for that matter, would be subjected to a barrage of private emails concerning a reply on a forum especially when it was not aimed at any one individual. If I can advise you, or anyone else for that matter, of a book you should read in an effort of passing on information to protect yourself from a bad investment, whether it be coins or anything else, why would that be political in nature? If I speak out against a state's taxing policies concerning different income coin collectors does that make it political when a forum moderator thinks it is GREAT that the rich doesn't have to pay taxes on their purchases? And then spend most of the day defending my position in private emails?
I guess what I am trying to say is I agree there are a lot of things that should not show up in a forum but when a post gets started WE all have the right to reply whether it would be favorably or not. I am a coin collector EVERY DAY! It is the most rewarding past time I have found in my life and I am in up to my neck! I come here to share and to learn and most importantly to seek out people just like me. I have never intentionally set out to offend any one and never will but I can and will defend my opinions just as we all should if those times arise! Many of the fine folks here have come to this forum for various reasons and I already know that some of them faced unwarranted attacks on other forums! Joesmom I can honestly say to any collector, "If you can't get along with me, you can't get along with anyone as I am as easy going as anyone you will ever meet"! Again, I consider you a NEW collecting friend and welcome you and your collecting knowledge with open arms! And, I appreciate your efforts to calm things down a bit but, as I said, "I am not angry, I just feel sorry for those who can't see the forest for the trees!

Hi everyone

First of all, in regard to the OP, I don't agree with the "autographed coin" thing at all. Granted, I am also one of those people who has never asked anyone for an autograph and who doesn't care if I ever meet somebody famous. I just have never seen the sense in it, so obviously ANY autographed coin is not for me.

Secondly, this thread has become very volatile. And, no, I'm not looking to pull anyone's posts. I just want a chance to voice my opinion.

Although I also had my reasons for leaving CT, I am not looking for our forum here to exist in competition with them. I would therefore prefer it if members would not "bash" that forum. I would not be where I am now if not for that forum and some of the wonderful people I met there.

It is my belief that numismatics is very closely associated with history, religion, and politics. All of these facets together make for terrific numismatic discussions. Short of making a "non-family-friendly" remark or personally attacking another member, I have no intention of pulling any posts. We are all reasonable, intelligent adults here and an open exchange of ideas is what makes our discussions great. This forum was designed for this exchange.

That said, the comments being made regarding CT are bordering on "personal attacks". I understand the need to vent, but I believe that we are a better caliber of people than that. CT and the other forums, all have their place in this hobby, and I see CT as more helpful than hurtful. Just my opinion, but I wanted you all to know how I feel.
