tcekolin Valued Member United States 69 Posts	Posted 09/24/2007 10:30 am Stopped by my CU. The coin teller has become a buddy and she let me look through some old wrapper Kennedy rolls. There was only one coin that looked as if it could be silver. Looking at the rims, it stood out from the pack. Bright white. The coin itself looks nothing like a couple of other 72s that I pulled out. Much whiter, just like silver. I got back to the office and looked at the rim through a magnifier and son of a gun, but there is copper peeking out of a couple of nicks. I looked around the net a bit and could find no reference of any silver kennedy from that year. 1972P. Darn. Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6381 Posts	Posted 09/24/2007 1:06 pm Hi Tony, Your half is almost certainly an ordinary 1972 which has perhaps been plated or otherwise altered. If it were mine, I would check the weight. It is just barely possible the coin was struck on a leftover 40% silver planchet. If so, it should weigh 11.5 grams. If it is a standard clad planchet, the weight would only be 11.34 grams. It's even less likely it is a 90% silver coin, but if it were the weight should be 12.5 grams. Report this Post to the Staff

tcekolin Valued Member United States 69 Posts	Posted 09/26/2007 08:19 am I took it to a jewelry store and they said it weighed 11.0 grams. I wonder if they just chunked it on a big scale that didn't weigh to tenths or hundredths because I didn't actually watch them weigh it. I have a gram scale that measures whole grams for cooking and a 64 kennedy will cause it to flicker between 12 and 13, a 69 makes it read 11 and 12. I have two other 72 kennedys which both look normal and they read 11 steady as does this mystery one. At some point, I'll get a better weight measurement, but for now I am satisfied that this coin has no silver in it, but it also doesn't look plated. It is just a whole lot whiter than a regular clad.
