I'm looking to buy some Engelhard Silverr Bars. Does anyone know if Engelhard has a website where you can buy from them direct. The only ones I saw were on ebay. If this is in the wrong section, please move it. Thank you, -Ben

Ben, Engelhard Corp was bought by BASF Chemicals sometime in the summer of 06 and they no longer have a website obviously. And yes you could buy silver bars from them if you were a member of certain trade groups. Kinda like standing outside a Ford plant and buying autos right off the line if you know what I mean.
If you put more specifics down on what you are looking for I'd be happy to give you my opinion on where/what/who for buying.

tulving.com has 100 ounce bars, but you have to buy 7 bars minimum. They sell for spot plus 60 cents/oz, with free shipping. I bought a box of silver eagles from them back in 98, so it's been almost 10 years since I dealt with them.

Twenty cent: I was looking for pure .9999 Silver Bars. I was thinking that 1 or 2 10 TR OZ. bars would be good. I don't need anything large like a 100 or 1,000 TR OZ. Also, I would prefer if they were uncirculated. But I would like to get them directly from the source brand new instead of used bars from ebay. -Ben

Although Engelhard (now BASF) and Johnson-Matthey are two of the world's largest refiners, they have not mass-produced silver bars since the mid-1980s. This means Engelhard and J-M bars are available only when other investors sell. However, Sunshine Minting and Wall Street Mint bars are readily available. Also Silver bars do not circulate, therefore all of them are uncirculated. 10 oz bars are a good size to have, kind of like $100.00 dollar bills. I really like the old poured style bars. they have character.

Would Sunshine Minting and Wall Street Mint bars be considered "high quality"?
And I think that I should have said brand new instead of uncirculated. Because some of the ones that I have seen have had dings/marks and were also discolred.
Now I know that you should never clean coins, but would it be considered acceptable to clean silver bars with silver polish?
Thank you in advance, and sorry for all of the questions. -Ben

I have heard of sunshine mint and think they are one of the main ones but the wall street mint I don't believe I have ever heard of. I had a 10lb ingot bar from AMC that I cleaned but if its a prooflike bar (with a proof finish) I probably wouldn't clean it because it would look bad because of scratches just like a impaired proof coin does

Gold, if bright and shiny isn't absolutely critical, you might consider this. I have been buying silver bars at estate auctions selling coins for a long time. Typically they are only one troy ounce and yes they are aged and at times have a few dings, but I always get them well below the current melt price. Unlike coins, their is no collector sentimentality only investment purposes, so no one is bidding them up. I generally can get them for about 90% of spot. Yes, they are not quite as pretty, but they are worth the same and bullion is always bullion. It is simply an investment vehicle. Jim

Are you looking for mark free bars from the collector standpoint or for the bullion?

I am looking for mark free bars from the collector standpoint. I'd prefer for them to still be in the origional plastic but it seems that that is hard to come by nowadays. -Ben

If you are looking for collector/value look for the odd sized bars 2 to 5 oz. I usally get them at spot + .25 at a local shop. If I ever need to sell, E-Bay assigns a pretty good premium for these. do a search for "silver bar 3" or "silver bar 5" and compare the sell price with the spot price. you can also figure out what bars have an collector following this way. There is no collector intrest in the 10 oz. bar. The (buying) dealer will not pay extra for "pretty". But if thats what you want, by all means go for it. It's All good Image Insert: Image Insert: Image Insert: I some how lost my Fort Knox Key, and they won't let me back in Image Insert:
