Here's a beauty I was waiting on!

LC-9A2, Strong Ground, no period, coin axis, 18.9g. I believe it is somewhere around VF30-EF40. Can someone verify the grade?

It looks like it's VF-30 to me.

With the amount of wear I would be hesitant to call it any higher than VF and more likely to call it a strong Fine+

Has to be at the very least a VF-30, I would think.

Going to wait for some more input.

Thanks,
Steve

The grades on these tokens are harsh. I would say a VF20 at best. I believe I had this coin graded at some point by ICCS and I believe it came back EF45 although I'm not 100% sure.

Hi, TheCoinHunter... It seems like the face wears first and gives the habitant a ghostly appearance. Yours is definately a much nicer token.

I think I'll price this one somewhere in the VF20-30 range.

Thanks everyone!

Doctor Courteau identified 10 different varieties of the
Large Ground / no period grouping. These are easily broken down
into two catagories dependent upon the upper section of the Garder
rim (the area above the letters DEI of CONCORDIA).

The rim is complete on varieties 9, 9b, 9c. 9d, 9e, and 9i.
The rim is broken on varieties 9a, 9f, 9g, and 9h.

The token in the above photo is of the broken rim variety.

The next area of concern is the lower right leafless stem of the Shamrock.

Variety 9a shews a light fork to the terminal of the stem.
Variety 9f shews a large fork, with the upper part the longer.
Variety 9g shews a short and lightly cut fork.
Variety 9h shews a light fork.

Not much help, thus we continue...

The letter 'S' in 'BAS' is:

Variety 9a - Perfect.
Variety 9f - Inverted.
Variety 9g - Inverted.
Variety 9h - Inverted.

ergo...yours is Courteau variety 9a having a rarity factor of 1 (common).

grade F-15. The buttons of the Jacket are sufficient to rate any higher.

Thank you, Doug, for a very informative response.

Is the Doctor Courteau material available online or is there a book? I'm using "Canadian Colonial Tokens"

I am not familiar with any on-line Courteau material.
Loaner copies should be available from the American Numismatic Society lending library and
the Royal Canadian Numismatic Society lending library. Borrow a copy and zerox it.
You may try googling ABEbooks.

David Sklow's Fine Numismatic Books Mail Bid sale No. 25, ending June 6, 2015 has some
Courteau works which I suspect will fetch above his estimate.
