A bit of an impulse buy, but I found this Julia Maesa on ebay shortly before the auction was going to end with only one bid on it. So I bid on it and won it. Looking forward to it getting here.   I'm pretty sure I got a good deal, but as this was an impulse buy I'm just curious how much you all think this coin is worth? |

Looking around a bit I'd say these retail somewhere around $75, maybe a bit more due to the very nice condition, probably less if you look around a bit and be patient since these are fairly common and not really that sought after. I really like it though, it's a high quality coin you could keep in your collection forever. Hope you did well on the price :)

Ok, I can see the pictures now, and it is the same type. However as there are legitimate versions of this what makes you say that this one is another fake versus being one of the real ones? I'd like to know that before I look into complaining to the seller.

Well I went ahead and sent a message to the seller to see if they will cancel the sale, since even if someone comes on here telling me it is real you guys have made me have enough doubt about it that I would rather save the money. We will see what they say.

alright.. I am not too good at pointing out what in particular makes it look fake other than general appearance but I would say this one having no signs of wear or age + strange surfaces + style makes it look fake, but an easy way to tell if someone is selling fakes is to look at stuff like this private listings ==almost always fakes Seller is on fake seller lists http://augustusmath.hypermart.net/fakesellers.html + forumancientcoins notorius fake sellers list sellers other coins are obvious fakes Edited by arnoldoe

This type was only struck in gold. Lots of casting bubbles on the reverse. Sorry to say I agree with the others a fake.

I see the little dots or casting bubbles on the reverse. I see them on the silver coin and the gold coin pictured.
Maybe I don't understand what a casting bubble is, or better what causes one. It just seems odd to me that they would be identical in the silver fake and the gold fake.
I guess I always thought it was the coin that was cast and had a casting bubble as a result. I must be wrong here.
I presume this means casting bubbles are in the cast dies and then the coins are stamped from them and that is how you have the exact same bubble in each fake coin? The bubble being a void or depression in the cast die the fake coin was stamped from.
This kind of makes sense, but then I wonder why I seem to notice these fake ancient casting bubbles seem to only be on one side of the coin. If it is the dies that are cast, why would only one of the dies have bubbles ever?
I seem to be spinning my process engineer trouble shooting wheels here with casting bubbles. Any help?
Also, who is the seller and how did you guys figure out who he was with only the picture?
Last item. I find the background most interesting. I make a very similar product, PVC coated scrim for wind screens around tennis courts and the like. That is some really low grade scrim. Very uneven product. Looks Chinese to me. It also seems that the seller has a roll of this. Just a really odd background all around.

Caveat Emptor. I concede every reputable seller has made mistakes, even sold fakes. However, ebay is ripe for this corruption, and as you have learned 100 percent feed backs are not relevant in regards to authenticity. I am curious, did this auction listing even have a relevant RIC number? ID? I know far less than most of my esteemed fellow members, but I know to match the RIC with Wildwinds or some other relevant source. I refuse to buy a coin from someone not putting an ID with coin. I always harp on RIC or relevant ID for a reason. This is why, especially for newer collectors like me who do not have the eye to spot a fake as easily as some other more experienced members. |
