I bought this coin a few years ago for my 7070, but have recently begun to suspect it as a fake. Any opinions?

It isn't a fake. I recently sold one a few weeks ago on ebay. 1836 and 1837 there was a change in the design on the obverse face and inscribing letters on the edges. Nothing looks fake to me. You bought a coin that was in the process of aesthetic changes. I would grade it VF30ish.

Just out of curiosity, which aspects of this coin make you doubt its authenticity?

IMHO ... Legit ... Reeded edge ... VF / Fine ... Pleasingly original look as so many have been scrubbed over the years ... Hard Times era ....

Good coin. Super Dave would like it as it's a "circulated cameo" for sure.

Thanks, everyone. As for pepactonius's question, I guess it was just the general appearance of the black cameo.

That's a Purdy circulated piece of history you have there. Like the "circulated cameo" it has lol
