It was turning black in this plastic storage tray thing my parents' picked up for me from the dollar store for Christmas. I took it out and put it in a 2x2.
It was turning blacker still, I figured it should be handled, the natural oils and all, eh? I rubbed off the black and it hasn't come back in 2 days. Is my oils bad?
Is it my chain smoking parents and sister? If I put it in a display case with a sicila gel pack should I be good?
I was in the middle of Jeopardy but anything for you guys.
This is the best I can do with my built in web cam on the lap top but can you see the blackening above the crescent moon and star/ modern day Turkey symbol? It is growing around the outer rim of the coin but I can rub it off.
I would agree with a soak in acetone, 100% rather than nail polish remover. Get yourself a PVC free flip or capsule to store it in. They are more expensive but are better to keep your coins safe.
I had it in a flip and after the rinse it shall go back in a new one. I was hoping to do the whole tray and handle thing with my Persian/Islamic collection. Oh well, sooner curate them for many years to come rather then have them turn into badly pateniaed monsters.
Acetone is probably your best bet to remove the back tarnish. Rubbing it in your fingers would hurts the coin either. The coin is Sassanian, most likely Khurso II, but would need to see the obverse to be sure.
