Hello All,

I just bought this piece last week on a whim at the fun show.

I have no idea what it is worth. Short story.

I met a very nice older guy who had a part of a small display of gold sitting wide open. I was (about) sure I saw someone pocket 1 piece. I bought remainder of inventory on the spot. I probably paid to much but I feel OK with the deal.
Here is a piece I cannot identify.

It appears to be a gold ducat from the Netherlands. Being mounted like that, it's probably not worth much over bullion.

It is a gold trade ducat but even sans mount should be worth a bit over gold. When gold was $350 an ounce the catalog gave a price of $150 in fine. These did find their way to the US and many collectors see them as "colonial US types". The KM number is 12 under Holland.

Thanks!

So I am OK @ the $1750 I gave?

Just kidding. The whole thing was a bit under spot.

Based on the old catalog - the coin had $38 dollars worth of gold in it when the catalog gave a value of $150 in good. Today the metal value is closer to $97. Therefore, it had a premium of about $100 OVER gold content when the catalog was created. So it is a VERY good deal at spot - even mounted. When prices adjust to reflect new metal values it should rise to about $200.

Now the only thing to make sure of is that the coin is real. The standard weight of a ducat is 0.11 grams. These were trade coins and at the time they were well received worldwide so the weight should be accurate. The alloy was 0.986 fine gold - so an SG should be very high like 18.9.

The coin is VERY soft.

I will get my jeweler to weigh a same size bezel and see what the coin weighs.

coin also came with a 22-24kt gold baht chain 24" long and 37 grams.
