I purchased a U.S. Marshals commemorative just before they went off sale in late December. For my tracking purposes I like to see what the value of the PM is in my collection. (I know this has numismatic value on top of the PM value but it's nice to be able to put a dollar figure on the collection if nothing else for insurance purposes.)

So I was wondering how much gold is in the $5 gold commemoratives. I did some calculations and came up with 0.265 ounces:

Per the COA, the weight of the coin is 8.359 grams, which translates into 0.29485505 oz. The coin is a 90% Au alloy, so that * 0.9 = ~0.265 oz of gold.

Does that sound right?

I think the $5 commemorative have the same gold content as a gold Half Eagle. Assuming I am right, that would be .242 oz of gold.

The net weight of the gold in US modern commemoratives is 0.241873 troy ounces (with troy being the key word).

Precious metal weights are measured in "troy ounces" which weigh 31.1034768 grams vs. the "standard ounce" of the avoirdupois system which weighs 28.3495231.grams.

The gold coin's math:

A. 8.359 grams * 0.90 = 7.5231 grams
B. 7.5231 grams / 31.1034768 grams (1 troy ounce) = 0.241873 troy ounces
