Hello everyone, I just picked this up the other day at I price I couldn't pass up. But does anyone know what is going on with it? The reverse is the area in question. Thanks for any feedback!

Hard to say after this long, but I'll throw out a couple of hypotheses: 1) broadstrike, or 2) struck on Half Cent planchet.

Looks like it had another coin against the rev and offset while it was exposed to a corrosive environment. The obv shows some corrosion but may have been against something as well. The coin on the reverse protected most of the rev but the exposed area suffered more corrosion than the rest.

I agree ... And lean toward what Conder posted.

I have dug coins that came out similar to that one.

Picture a coin buried in a yard with another coin on top.
Than have fertilizer put on the yard every year. The exposed
part of the coin really suffers damaged.

I'm with Condor on this one, an acid or possibly left outside maybe in the ground for many years.

I agree with Conder as well. Looks like a reverse die break from S through tat and coming back up to the rim at E. Need to check 03 terminal die states.
