.finally arrived. I have been looking for a late 1840's Philadelphia mint quarter for some time, and this one seemed to fit the bill, but was a bit skeptical about how it would look like in-hand based on the original pictures. I was therefore pleasantly surprised with what actually came this morning. My pictures do not to the coin justice: it has a pleasant golden tone with nice luster remaining on semi-reflective fields. I had originally estimated the grade as EF40'sh, but it is actually better. I do not think I will be sending this one back. How does she look to you? Nice coin! Maybe EF45, but I don't think AU on account of wear on the eagle feathers. I had the same urge to get a Seated dollar from the early 1850's, and found an 1853 in VF I could afford. "Two minutes ago I would have sold my chances for a tired dime." Fred Astaire

I think you could squeeze a low AU out of that coin.

Looks solid for EF-45, with a pleasing original look. The date is broadly re-punched with the original digits shifted to the left. The reverse shield also has the "compass point" defect described in this interesting article by Greg Johnson. http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/...bleddate.htmIt's a lovely coin and I wouldn't send it back either! It looks like it should go AU50. If there's more luster than the images show then a 53 grade is possible. Nice one!

I'm in the AU-50 camp on this one, Germanicvs. Regardless, it may well be a condition census piece, among the top ten, perhaps? Super coin ...

Thank you very much for your comments. I am also of the opinion this coin would grade AU50, perhaps a little higher. I see only very small amount of wear or rub on the obverse, and some small field abrasions. For some reason I am unable to take good pictures of my Seated coinage, be it dimes or quarters, such that the luster present to the naked eye becomes evident. I even showed this coin to my wife, and she liked it (at least she did not ask he how much I paid for it). I have read that the 1848 quarter used to be considered quite a scarce issue, and has become more abundant in recent years - possibly as a small hoard was released and dispersed. Still, it is a considered to be one of the a scarcer Philadelphia mint quarters from the 1840's. |

AU53 and appears to be a recut or repunched date as well based on the lines around the numerals.
