i have one '96 silver american eagle that hasn't been kept in an air tight case, and its beginning to turn almost a copper color around the edges. is that toning? is that something that an acetone bath would fix?

Acetone won't remove the toning.

Is it unattractive? I had some black spots on the edges of one of mine that I removed with a commercial coin dip, but that was really ugly. Copper color may add to the coins appeal. Any way to get a picture and post it here?
