Hello everyone So I purchased this 1857 flying eagle and once I put it under a loupe I noticed two small specks , one on obverse and one on reverse .. I currently have the coin in acetone hoping that will do the trick ! Any suggestions ? The first speck in right below the A in America on the obverse , the smaller speck on the reverse is right about 2 o clock ... Both these spots are very hard to even see without magnification , so hopefully they can be removed !!   *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** |

How often do people clean coins to make them better? And how/what are the acceptable methods that doesn't cause a coin to come back as "cleaned" when graded?

Well guys it's already in the acetone , and as far as I know soaking a coin in acetone isn't considered cleaning it !! Am I wrong ? I've been told several times by members here to try acetone on similar problems !!
The coin has no hairlines and the color seems about right in hand , other than these two tiny specks in my opinion it's problem free !
If I leave it be wouldn't it get worse over time?
With these two small specks in question would that make it a details coin ?

But back to my question, what are acceptable meathods of making a coin look better... There has to be something since PCGS, NGC, ANACS all do restoration services

You might try some Verdi-Care, although I don't think it will help either. That being said, pretty sure that the TPG's wouldn't give this a Details grade just for the spots. They may be slightly bothersome to look at, but really aren't that big of a deal IMHO. |

You will only see acetone recommended for crud removal, such as PVC contamination. If the coin has any value it is very rare to see a recommendation for ANY kind of cleaning.
In the case were acetone will do no good, as in this case, no cleaning or dipping is fervently recommended.
