Metalman Pillar of the Community United States 7123 Posts	Posted 02/18/2008 12:23 am Probably the Rocker or roller press , but very early in the US coin history the Screw Press was introduced and was used up until the early 1800's when the steam powered screw press was invented . Metalman Pillar of the Community United States 7123 Posts	Posted 02/18/2008 11:02 am the original screw presses were man powered ,, I think is was around 1830 or there abouts that the steam screw presses were introduced in europe ,, and perhaps a few years after that before they were introduced here in the US . a quick search for screw press might reveal more details or at least more accurate dates ,,Im working from articles that I read several years ago and my memory ain't what it used to be . Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 02/18/2008 3:38 pm The very early Massachusetts silver was coined by hand with sledge and punch. Most of the tree shillings etc were produced on rocker presses. The small flan pine tree shillings may have been done on screw presses. The state coinages and fugio cents were done on screw presses. I can't say for sure but there may have been the occasional private coiner out there that used a drop press. Report this Post to the Staff
