I would keep it. It certainly worth more than a nickel, and especially cool if you found it in the wild.

It is a MAD, not an off-center strike. The misalignment is severe enough to make it collectible. If it had been a left or right alignment issue, some of the peripheral devices would have been cut off at the edge but a bit of the bust base missing is not quite as dramatic in appearance.

Very good thank you guys. And yes it was found when I was going through a box of nickels looking for silver, etc. (Of which I found absolutely nothing except this...lol) So...one good nickel is better than nothing..  What kind of value here are we talking, btw ? .25 - $1.00 ? $5.00-$10.00 maybe ? |

It is a nice example of a MAD but the condition would probably limit the value to a couple dollars. Quote:

John, in regards to the black smudge... I think it would come off. It's like a thick sticky caulking or someone had a nice Kansas City BBQ sandwhich a few years ago, and let it drip on their pile of change from the waitress. .. |

$5.00-$10.00 maybe ? Prices for error coins are all over the place but I wouldn't be surprised to see this sell for over $10. I would be shocked to see it sell for $40. My best guess would be $10-$15 because the misalignment is substantial. |

Yes, nice coin. Something tells me as you learned about this error, you will learn of others, and varieties. Your one find in a box ratio will improve drastically.

Is there a circular scratch starting above the nose, running through the chin , and across the collar? It looks like it might be a scar from a counting/rolling machine but I cannot quite tell from the photo.
