Check this out. 1836 Bust Half Dollar. Coin was submitted to NGC. Can you guess the grade? Was it graded or bodybagged?

ND...what do you say...I see what NGC said (sorry) but I call this coin cleaned---I know that it is said 90% of coins have been cleaned at one point in time and Bust halves are known to be cleaned...but with the color of this coin and the hair lines...I would call this cleaned...

BTW...isn't that some doubling on the date? it sure does look like it...

I would also call it cleaned or, to be more specific dipped. The color looks too uniform. I could be wrong; been known to happen on rare occasion. I haven't yet looked at the answer thread (I haven't found it yet).

I also have a philosophical problem with TPGs who reject old coins which have been cleaned, at least lightly cleaned as this might have been. Just because a coin has been cleaned does not mean that it no longer has historical value. A cleaned 1836 BHD is still 169 years old and has seen a lot of history.

The scratch going across the top of the cap extends past the coin. So that would indicate the scratch is on the slab which would indicate that it was graded.
