I was scrolling through the noodling finds of the week and there are a few mint marked dollar coins found "in the wild". I collect and keep 50 of each coin of each year and want to check them out for mint marks. Has anyone compiled a list of where, on the dollar coins, the mint marks are located?

I answered my own question for the 1997 dollar coin. I re-noodled all of my commemorative dollars and found a C mintmark Kingsford Smith dollar. Not sure how that slipped past me when I first kept it.

And I had collected these over the years and assumed they were from mint sets - but now I am on a roll and inspected them and found they are all C mintmarked coins. What is it about C mintmarks making their way the Perth?

Which begs the question. Are all of my finds - just sets purchased from the mint, and they have escaped from someone's collection into the wild - or are they from open days? Are mintmarked dollar coins from open days the same as the circulating coin of that year?

Generally speaking, the following are descriptions of the RAM's Mint Marks:

MINT MARK - RAISED C - No surround - RAM
Available from RAM & Coin Dealers etc.

COUNTERSTAMP - INCUSED Circle surrounding Raised Letter - Portable Press
Only available at ANDA Shows & Royal Easter Show, Sydney.

PRIVY MARK - Square surrounding INCUSED Letter -RAM
Readily available from RAM & Coin Dealers etc.

I'm not sure if the 'Privy Mark' is still being used. I don't buy much from RAM, so it may be in use, just that I don't see much evidence of it.

Thanks Nancy. It seems then that 4 of mine are from RAM singles or sets and 2 are from ANDA shows.
