I agree with John... It looks like maybe some type of adhesive or clear glue.

I just contacted the person who gave this to me regarding where he got the coin because it is a BU specimen. I will let you know what he says once I get news back

He did label it as that, I got it for free, so if worst comes to worst, I have a free BU 1968-D

Yep! I would see if the area in question can be scraped of with a toothpick, just to check.

The person who gave me the coin said it was a circulation find many years ago, he said clashed die was a bad explanation, and he said it was a filled die. I tried the toothpick method and it did not do anything.

It appears to be the same color as the coin but did not come off with the toothpick.

So I tried again with the toothpick a little harder and the GREASE was disturbed. Into the yellow envelope it goes to tone. Coop, If you'd like to add to your educational files, go right ahead
