Have a great weekend!

"Well our fathers fought the Second World War
Spent their weekends on the Jersey Shore
Met our mothers in the USO
Asked them to dance
danced with them slow..."

A Many, Many Thanks to all Vets past and present,
If you sailed in ships or rode in tanks.
You stood your ground and did not leave
so that those left behind could be free.

In the second WW my father rode to war with two spans of six horses and two cannons
He was captured after a day and a half surrounded by tanks and halftrucks
He spent a nice vacation as a prisonner of war on a work farm were he was allowed to eat all the cooked grass and worms and beatles and cats he could find
He was allocated a restitution sum of money for hardship long after he was dead
The money only applied to survivors not their widows
So at 94 my mother is still struggling to survive
Rest in Peace

Thank you Vets! Too many people think Veteran's Day is just a day for the post office and the banks to be closed...

Veterans day originally was known as Armistice day in America.

I've seen more outpouring of thanks to veterans this day than I can remember in all of my adult life which goes back a long way (including 1954 when the US switched from Armistice Day to Veterans' Day). Perhaps this is an effect of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan which, for better or worse, is involving more and more military personnel thus heightening awareness in all quarters.

In another group (ham radio, not coins) which I moderate, I asked the vets to step forward and identify themselves and their service. So far, we're almost up to 50, many from subscribers who have never posted before, covering from before World War II through Iraq including one who is on his way back for his third tour.

I might also ask the Coin Community veterans to come forward. I'll start: US Army Signal Corps, 1968 - 1992.

In Australia it is called Rememberance Day

It is still a big deal and people make quite a day of it.

May I salute all of you who have served in the armed services of your countries

Like Fred, I don't ever remember so much gratitude being shown toward vets as we are seeing this year. Those men and women serving now deserve all they can handle, and then some. Don't ever forget them.

Served from 1/43 to 8/45 on the SS 316 Barbel in the Pacific. Motor Mach.3C, and gunner on port side of tower. We lost her off the coast of Talewan in 45, and she is still running deep.

My uncle is a Vietnam vet- he served on an aircraft carrier (don't ask me which one, I can't remember- was there an Eisenhower?), and he always downplays his service by saying that he never saw actual combat. I say it doesn't matter, he still served! My grandfather was in WWII, but I have no idea where he was or what he did. He would never talk about it, and my grandmother's memory is getting fuzzy. Sad really, I didn't even know he was a vet until I saw the folded up flag on his casket at his funeral.
