Which-One-Would-You-Choose?--1803-Vs-1808-1/2-Cent

I'm thinking about replacing the 1808 in my type set with this one.

Here's the 1808...

Both have their own problems. The 1808 shows signs of an old cleaning with some corrosion on the reverse @ 10:00. The evidence of the LDS on this one is really attractive.

The rim damage @ 4:00 on the 1803 obverse, along with the gouge on the bust are there. "BUT" They aren't as noticeable with the coin inside the album.

I think the 1803 is a common Cohen 3. (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

That being said, it's one of only 90,000 minted vs. the 400,000 mintage of the 1808.

I feel that both coins are in the VF range. Both would probably come back from a TPG with a 'details' grade.

I have less than $250 invested in both of these coins, and I like them both for different reasons. I only have one 7070 though.

Based only on eye appeal, the 1808.

I like the 1803 better. The quality of the copper (non-porous) and the more "honest" wear versus the 1808 is the selling point for me.

On the whole though, I'd take both if you at all can! I like them both!!

1808 has a bit more detail so that's what I'd go with

I like the surfaces and the amount of detail more on the 1808.
Rest in Peace

I'm keeping 'em both Moe.

The 1808 has been occupying the hole for a couple of years. I was perfectly happy with it for 3 years. Then...I met the 1803. Now, I'm torn between the two.

I like the darker chocolate color of the 1803 in the album...

It has a certain 'feng shui' to it.

A guy at a coin shop told me this would happen when he sold me my 7070. He warned me not to buy it. He warned me of the dangers of 'upgrading'. I didn't listen...

Now, here I sit... with $.01 worth of copper that I've paid $250 for. Searching for another 7070 album...

Set side by side the 08 looks to be perhaps a grade higher than the o3

If you could promise me that I'd be able to sell/trade both of them and get one XF example, I'd agree with you.

Until then, I'm stuck with two coins and one hole. I do realize that having two of these, in their condition, is a nice 'problem' to have. I'm starting to fall in love with the early coppers. 10 years ago, I didn't even know that 1/2 cents existed.

Let's also keep in mind that my photography skills are limited to a desk-lamp and a Sony cybershot 6.0 pocket cam in iso mode.

The 1808 is a better coin. Not only is it a higher numerical wear grade, it doesn't have rim damage. It's a late die state, for sure. The only thing the 1803 has going for it, other than mintage, is better color -- the 1808 appears to have been cleaned but has retoned fairly acceptably.

If only those coins could talk...

I like em both, the 08 IS a higher grade but there's something about the look/character of the 03 I like..
