Looking carefully at enlarged images, I would have to agree that AU-55 seems too high. Perhaps AU-50, but I would not have been surprised to see it at EF-45. The hair wear is quite evident, and I don't believe it is a strike issue.

The blurred branch on the reverse left me scratching my head.

Ugly, bagmarked, overdipped, lifeless, dull, flat, and nowhere near AU55. It also has a huge scratch on the reverse, left field, upper area.

I would net grade VF35 at most just on the basis of the absolutely terrible eye appeal. Sharpness is XF45.

FMV on an AU55 is $1.3k+, seller at $1k is admitting openly that this is a bad problem coin...I would offer at most $650 to $700 and only if I was really desperate for an 1849 that I wasn't expecting to sell later on. It's only a slightly better date, and there are much better examples for the $1k-$1.3k price range if you are working on an XF-AU Seated $1 set.

I'd say EF-45. Good eye!

Nice find BH! WTH would someone buy it in April and try to flip it just seven months later? I wonder what % of bidders on heritage are people hoping to flip for profit down the road.

Also (I hope you don't mind sharing)what methods did you use to uncover the history of this coin? Was it the serial number on the slab?

You can review completed auction listings on CoinFacts for specific dates/grades but in this case it was entering the cert # in PCGS' homepage revealing prior auction appearances. http://www.PCGS.com/cert/33207572

If you open that page you'll see it also just sold in September of this year (again!) for $823. https://coins.ha.com/itm/a/1239-7882.s Some people like to flip coins for fun (and profit) and that seems to be the case here. Not likely to generate much profit on this one since it looks more like an AU50 than a 55.
