What is the real difference between .999 and .9999 silver? Does one carry a premium over the other?

We talked about something like this fairly recently, at http://goccf.com/t/280585

The difference is more in the effort to produce than the intrinsic value of the piece. I believe any premium would be due to scarcity and quality of the product, rather than purity.

No amazing difference. Gold can be purified pretty well with today's technology. .9999 is about the most you need. I think that more nines is a marketing ploy.

The slight difference in purity gets swamped by the slight differences in weight (tolerance).

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams.

At 3 9s, you need to weigh 31.1346346 to get that troy ounce of silver (ASW)
At 4 9s, you need to weigh 31.10661066 to get that troy ounce
5 9s is 31.103811038

The difference between 3 9s and 4 9s is 0.0280239 which is just BARELY at the limit of accuracy of most scales you can buy (+/- 0.02 or 0.01g) without spending a ton.

There was a RCM video posted a couple weeks back on gold refining, to go from 4 9s to 5 9s took a week of electro-deposition extraction.
