can an alloy planchet have lamination? Maybe if improperly mixed the copper and zinc weren't combined properly in that area and are separating from each other.

there are lots of these nickels with die cracks, lamination errors, clashes. the war time nickel and penny dies did overtime and the quality control was practically non existant. one could spend a lot of time studying all of the minor errors in this period.
