Hi all. I was in an antique shop the other day and saw a 3 coin mint set of the S mint Bicentennial Quarter, Half and Ike dollar in original Mint Plastic Package. It was listed at $25. Are these silver or clad? Is $25 a good price for these? |

I bought a set last year from the "local" coin dealer for my type set. They were silver & if I remember correctly I paid $13. Silver has gone up since then so they may be more now, but probably not that much more. I can't remember if the 3 coin set came in clad also.

25 dollars is a little high if you ask me, I bought mine for my 7070 album for about 9 bucks and I believe they are silver also but still that price is high

The three-coin sets were silver. The clad proofs were only available in the regular six-coin proof set.

Thanks for getting back to me, you say they are silver? are thay pure or fine silver, or 90%? Just trying to figure out the melt value with todays silver price. Thanks all!

Just to answer my own question, from looking at the Coin Facts page here on CoinCommunity, looks like the set may be 40% silver. At the current price of $16.88 troy oz for silver, that makes the melt value of the 3 coin set right at about $9.03. So I agree, $25 is a little steep. I wonder if I can make the guy an offer, I really like the set...

You are correct, they are 40% Silver. Prices of completed ebay auctions appear to run in the $13~$17 range. I'd say with shipping, you can easily get the set for bit less than $20, so use that information to make him an offer! |

If you do like the set and the antique dealer won't budge on the price, check with local coin shops and save the shipping. I picked up a set a month or two ago for eleven dollars.

I own 2 sets. The first one I got for I think $8 about 6 years ago. And it is just the 3 coins in the folder. The second set I bought was $15 last year, and it has the 3 coins in the folder with the folder set in a styrofoam tray inside a cardboard box. I would assume this is how they were originally shipped from the mint.

It is a 40% silver set and $15 is a good price for the UNC.
I like the case/holder that the proofs come in and would go $20 on it.

Thanks for the info and replys guys. I offered to make a deal but they do not except best offers, so I guess no deal...  . I ended up getting something else anyway.. |
