I work in food service, my co worker got this penny as a bad tip for his service. I gave him a nickel for it...did he make out or did I?

I think that you did.

Probably should have lead with I am so very new to coin collecting. I like finding things that look different. But I have no idea what this may be worth or the grading system. I would probably say this would be good condition? Any thoughts?

According to photograde, there must be a total of three letters of LIBERTY (in the headband) to be VG. I don't see that, so yes I would agree with a grade of G4 or perhaps G6. Retail for that is somewhere north of a buck I'd say. Others will weigh in too.

It's not worth a lot, but a lot more than a nickel*!

*Depending on what the nickel was.

@RhodHayes

If it hasn't already been suggested, purchase a copy of the latest Red Book. It contains a lot of information about U.S. coins in a small and inexpensive reference.

Looks like a nice solid "Good" to me. Yeah, 1 to 2 bucks is what you could probably get.

Do you have a coin dealer nearby? They could give you an idea in person. And they probably would enjoy hearing your story!
