Hello,

i was hoping someone could help me with this 80 AD Roman coin of Titus. I have got a couple messages saying that my coin is a fake and I been trying to learn as much as I can about this coin. I took some pictures of it and hoping to get some help. I looked all over for this exact same coin and unable to find it anywhere. I search Fake Judaea Capta and was unable to locate my coin. It does look similar to the 71 AD Vespasian Coin but the inscription on the front shows IMP T CAES VESP AVG PM TR PPP COS VIII as the Vespasian Coin is just about the same besides having the T between IMP and CAES. I did find a book online called the tweleve cesaers that shows the coins made under each 12 emperors and under Titus it does show there being this coin made during Titus in 80AD not 71AD but anyway here is images of some fake coins similar to mine

Fake Coinsi found on google using search words Fake Jadaea Capta.

Now here are pictures of my coin, that look way diffrent and weighs over 20 grams while fake ones are around 9 grams. So how can I tell if its a fake when I dont see any signs of it being a fake.

Your coin is a cast fake I am afraid to say.

Here is an identical example in the British Museum that they describe as a "forgery". You coin has identical flan shape, detail etc.

Looking through the BM collection they have at least four of these and they describe them as circa 16th century or later and School of/style of: Giovanni da Cavino. All four are cast copies and match your example.

There are folks that collect Cavino fakes, although they are not valued highly.

Well, just a minor point of clarification: the OP coin is not a Cavino but, rather, a cast in the style of Cavino. According to Sayles, in "Classical Deception," all of Cavino's work was die struck. That's what the guy did; he engraved and struck dies. On the other hand there are lots of "Paduan type later cast(s) after Giovanni da Cavino" (CNG's term).

Still a beautiful replica and certainly not entirely without worth. If you were to visit a major museum and stopped by the Gift Shoppe how much would something like this cost ? Well most museum gift shops are a bit pricey but I would think $100 would sound about right. What you might get for it selling it as a "used" trinket ?
Probably half of that at best.
I am notoriously cheap
I mean really cheap !
But if I found this at the flea market for $20 I would grab it
How far above that ....... I don't know

I'm with FVRIVS RVFVS, this is a very nice coin. I'd be happy to own a replica like that. (As long as I didn't pay too much for it.)
