"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

I was at Canadian Coin, so they XRF this coin too 99.99% nickel and .001% something else I didn't right down, and slightly underweight

I'm missing the entire reason for this post -do see the photos ... what is the OP trying to share?
Truly - a few clarifying sentences telling what this is and why it's special would go a long way towards explaining the expertise that the OP has and we do not.
The Mission of the CCF is Education - so educate us OP on what you believe you have found. We do not need a volume - a few sentences will work.

So, is the penny struck on a nickle planchet .. your info above says on a dime, which isn't nickel. A penny is larger diameter than a dime.

 nicklesearcher & coinfrog, the title says penny on dime. okiecoiner, dimes of the eighties were pure nickel. A penny can be struck on a dime planchet in collar, not so easy for penny on nickel, the collar must be disengaged. "Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

I think the lighting on your coin may have been confusing. it comes out somewhat copperish in the photos. a whiter light may help show it better.

A collector was referred to me by a couple show dealers, only reason for buying this coin was the grade and really nice strike and the year 1988 is not as common as say 1979 penny on dime. The Torex show was very slow, but the auction had some really great coins and currency. I have very limited computer skills
