The D is filled likely because the stem that would have created the hollow part, broke from constant use.
Not uncommon, and IMO not an error just a die state.

The 1953 D variety is a double profile and mintmark according to Spadone's Variety and Oddity Guide. This a worn die, no extra value. But you can keep it as a good example of a filled D! A collectible doesn't have to make you rich in the wallet just a rich experience.
