Please rate my purchase of an 1844 Victoria Young Head Crown/star stops (other variety has cinquefoil stops). Paid £78 for it, but decent grade?
Mintage for this year (both varieties included) was 94,248

G'day,
1844 was the first Crown issued for circulation since 1822; low mintage; and therefore can be expected to command a premium in the market place.
This is a very pleasing specimen:
no significant dings;
one small scratch below the Queen's ear;
full details of her hair;
one headband a little worn;
reverse shows slight wear on the crown and on the smaller elements of the design, but all are very clear.
I expect that you are very pleased to get that coin at the price you mentioned.

I was just comparing your latest purchase to one I have had for a while, and noticed some differences on the reverse.
The lettering on yours looks to have a curve base on them.
The one I have has a flat base lettering,have a look at the E and F in DEF. Also the B in Britt on yours has a curved base.
What are the known varieties for these coins, as I don't know much about these.
I don't have any images done of the obverse.

Ok, I'll ask.

Were there two different reverses?

I'm sorry, I don't know. I was merely making some observations with what I had noticed and was wondering the same.
In the first part of the thread, NumisMattyUK,says there are the varieties of the star stops and the cinquefoil stops.
I am only assuming these maybe on the reverse, near the rose.
A link to some info would be handy.

The stops are indeed to the left and right of the little rose on the reverse below the wreath.
Parklane -can you not see the differences in the E and F of "DEF"? It looks as though a different
font type was used to make them.
