1986 Lincoln Memorial Cent Hey All You Chemist Types, What Might Cause This?

hockingzig Pillar of the Community United States 1450 Posts	Posted 07/18/2008 9:18 pm I found a 1986 Lincoln Cent with very weird toning.'t show up like it looks to the eye.The best description I can give you is a light mint green. It is evenly coating the coin like it may have been dipped in something but I could not think of anything in my limited knowledge that would give copper a yellow-green/mint-green color from a reaction. Any ideas? p.s. I am going to include the pic even though the color is not accurate at least you can see the coating! Report this Post to the Staff

biggfredd Rest in Peace United States 9104 Posts	Posted 07/18/2008 11:03 pm Natural copper toning is green oxide. I used to have a mint cent that was green on one side and normal on the other. From the pitting, looks like it could have been quickly dipped in nitric acid. That's the stuff they use to test gold plate, the copper core bubbles up green. Report this Post to the Staff

BadThad Bedrock of the Community United States 19961 Posts	Posted 07/19/2008 3:32 pm On my coin it's just toning. I can't tell anything from that picture you posted. The toning is mainly caused by reaction of the surface to atmospheric contaminants and storage materials, such as sulfur compounds. Copper is highly reactive and can tone quite beautifully.
