manahei New Member United States 9 Posts	Posted 07/21/2008 2:06 pm Just came into a lot of Liberty. But I am having difficulty reading the letters. Some images online for 'S' look like 'D' to me. vermontensium Moderator United States 16679 Posts	Posted 07/21/2008 8:54 pm Many of the 1912 Liberty nickels tend to have a "squashed" looking mint mark in the G-VG levels due to wear. Nickel is very soft and tends to flatten the MM's. The 2nd is a D for sure. If I had to guess on the first, I'd say D as well. swcoin.ecrater.com Report this Post to the Staff

Because of its hardness, it is difficult to obtain a fully struck coin and it also quickly wears dies contributing to mushy details. I am not really sure why I have seen so many people posting lately about the supposedly "soft" nickel but that is a major misconception and really needs to be dismissed Report this Post to the Staff
littleboy Pillar of the Community United States 764 Posts	Posted 07/22/2008 03:14 am the first one is definitely a D. the shape of the left side of the mint mark is not like the S mint mark. the second is most likely a D but it is possible, though unlikely, an S mint mark was damaged in the top left corner.
