Hello All, I'm considering purchasing this 1931-s Lincoln Cent but wanted to get your input on its originality and such (didn't do so well on the last one). The right field on the obverse looks a little funny but overall it looks good to me, I'm not very good at diagnosing these types of issues though. Seller's pictures not mine.

It looks like somethings wrong with the 1 in 1931. Its way too high compared to genuine examples and its tilted right. Altered coin possibly?

In the 1930's the Mint used several styles of 3. Shown on the left is the style they used in 1931. It is different than the 3 shown on the right.

The mint marks are also different.

My off the top of my head guess is altered 1937-S.

Now that you mention it the 1 does look high, the 7 on the 1937 looks to be at way to sharp an angle to produce to a result like that without causing serous damage to the coin.

edit: you're right though something is definitely wrong with the 3'. thank you for looking, should I try to get the listing removed (the coin is on ebay) or just move on?

Last digit is tilted, I used a real 1931 S to compare.

But looking at 1937 S Lincolns, the leg of the seven is far more tilted than this 1 is.

Don't know why people bother faking the 31S since really great ones are so common.

I am surprised that this coin is still active in auction with 3 hours left. No bids though.

carl - the '31-S is common, but not as common as the '37-S!
