So I think I have stumbled across a 1946 S over D Trumpet tail S Wheat penny. A) Is it worth anything substantial? B) Is it worth sending in to be graded given its current condition? Any and all second opinions would be greatly appreciated. I know the MS66 RD trumpet tail sold for $4,000 at auction. But that was a beautiful coin.

I apologize. The pictures are the best I could get with my phone.

Oh wow. It's late. I need to go to bed. Just realized I mistitled this. It's a 1946 S Wheat penny. (Obviously) haha

to CCF. I am not seeing it. http://coppercoins.com/lincoln/dies...ie_state=lds
Also,it would not be worth sending in to be graded.

First,

Your coin may well be one of the dozens of S/S varieties, but it isn't the S/D.

First, your mm isn't in the right location. The top of the mm on the S/D lines up roughly equal to the tip of the "9" and the left side of the mm lines up directly below the point of the "4." Your mm is too far south and west.

Second, there is a key die marker that is actually easier to spot than the overmark. It is a die chip at 11:00 in the inverted "V" at the bottom of Lincoln's vest. Your coin does not appear to have any die chips in the inverted "V." Here's the place to look for the die chip:

Again, you may have one of the many repunched mint mark varieties for the date. Check the listings on doubledie.com and coppercoins.com and varietyvista.com to see if you have one of them.

Don't give up. Keep hunting. Again, welcome!

Note on this image. You can see vertical and the upper loop, also not circled is on the east side of the mint mark, you can see the 'D' outside the mint mark.

Looks like a vending machine took out the 'L'. It knocked the 'L' out of it! LOL
