I had no trouble understanding that you found it in a corn field 40 years ago. Must be a midwest thing.
I was going to ask what metal detector you were using back then, but I see it was an eyeball find.
Nice coin.

Nice find! I would change my member name to match my first find with a metal detector, but "Aluminium Pull Tab" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

For everyone, So, I don't know how to respond to each and every one who posts, but it has been OUT of a corn field for the last 40 years. Sorry for the confusion. While detasseling corn, way back in 1975-78, a work friend and I were walking up a corn row, he threw a rock at me, in jest, and I picked up the first thing that I saw to throw back...first though it was a beer cap...fortunately, I looked first, and I saw this in my hand! I never had a chance to return to that corn field, I suspect it was an old homestead.

Yokozuna, my first finds with a metal detector were a Wheat Back, a Wheat Back and a silver dime on my 20 acres of Finnish property in northern WI. three years ago. I need to spend more time out there!

Errers and Varietys, Thank you, my dad was pretty impressed. I gave it to him for safe keeping, never been out of his plastic box of coins since when I found it. It came back to me with that box, just 5 years ago.

what an awesome grab from the dirt. as a young teen growing up in MI I spent a fair amount of time detasseling. never found anything like what you found. I was lucky enough to just find my way out of the corn.
i have to concur with the DO NOT CLEAN THAT COIN crowd. for now just keep it safe & dry, read up on coin cleaning methods when you're able.. no erasers, no scouring pads or grinders, no abrasives, no 'towelfinger', etc.. there's likely a gentle soak & rinse you could try, but you should consider finding some junker coins to practice on first. using junker coins you can also utilize the harsher methods & see what those methods will do to coin surfaces.

panzaldi, I have never touched the coin in the last 40 years, and found this community to help me learn. Thanks for the scary response! My first find is in the same condition that it was 40 years ago when I picket it out of an Illinois corn field. Verdi-Care, which you advised to me, is not, nor ever available! It seems that coin collectors believe in that crap, and buy it out.

panzaldi, it appears that VerdiCare is sold out! Every one wants this stuff! My 1845 penny has never been touched from the day I found it. I have no intention to take an eraser to it. I thank you for your knowledge.

westernsky, this coin has been in a box with many other coins, never touched for 40+ years. I asked "New in this game. What is the best way to clean it, or not, and keep its quality" "OR NOT" I am in the world of talking with those who know...Thank you for your knowledge, eh?

I metal detect out here in MA, and corn fields are always hot spots for old coins. They are my favorite places to search.
