Why Is This Coin's Value So Volatile? 1947-S US Philippines Peso Macarthur?

newguy22 Valued Member United States 277 Posts	Posted 05/10/2020 5:28 pm I was going through PCGS's auction records on a few coins I saw up for sale on GreatCollections. One coin for sale today was a 1947-S US Philippines Peso graded by PCGS MS-66. Gorgeous coin with the opening bid being $145. https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...-MS-66-Toned Was going through the PCGS auction records of the coin, and the same coin with the same grade sold for over $2,000 in 2013. In fact, going through all the auction records, albeit there aren't a lot of them, the value of the coin seems to be going all over the place. https://www.PCGS.com/auctionprices/...ur-ms/555512 Just wanted to get some opinions from some more experienced collectors on why this would be. These coins come in Gem * condition so wait for a great one at a cheap price. I paid $45 for mine. Same goes for the smaller version. Report this Post to the Staff

Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 05/12/2020 11:50 am Looking over the PCGS auction prices tells me the prices AREN'T all over the place with just one exception. First that 2013 sale at $2255 was for a MS-66 not a 65. You are probably looking at a grade rarity or top pop circumstance there The rest of the listings range from MS-63 to 65+. The 63 to 65's range from $14 for the 63 and $41 -$48 for the 64 and 65's. The one outlyer is the MS-65 that sold in Feb 2018 for $408. I would tend to consider that to be a fluke price (possibly two bidders who thought it could get a 66 if resubmitted) and not an actual indicator of the market, especially with the Jan 202 sale of a 65+ only bringing $114.
