Back in the day, tobacco stocks didn't have the stigma they later earned. The companies were proud of their product and nearly all their stocks and bonds featured tobacco in the field. You might recognize a few of these names.

American Tobacco later became American Brands, as it diversified. The Indian chief depicted was first engraved by American Bank Note and later Security-Columbian Bank Note tried to recreate the portrait. You can decide which did a better job.

Remember L&M cigarettes? Those initials stood for Liggett & Myers.

Found a couple more. These are both stocks from the Tobacco Products Corporation. At first glance the vignettes appear the same, but they are different engravings. They depict sharecroppers and the figures are almost faceless. It's a little creepy.

It makes you wonder: what products that are popular today will be reviled in the future?

I rediscovered one that fits here, among my foreign bonds. This is a 100 guilder Dutch tobacco bond from 1925. I'm not sure where the plantations were, but I bet it was Indonesia.

By the 1970s, Liggett had diversified from simply tobacco products (as represented by the vignette) and was now calling itself Liggett Group. But have no fear, they were still selling cigarettes, too.

As one who enjoys fine tobacco ... these would find space on the wall of the "ManCave". Framed and protected from the the cigars smoke of course ! :)

An earlier Liggett & Myers, between the two posted. Dated 1966

I noticed the later Liggett stock uses the figures, but made the center the rather boring corporate logo.

The center vignette of the tobacco plant was used on the Lorillard stock shown above.

I am fortunate to have the ABNco plate for this particular stock, with the vignette and company name.

Ah Ha! I saw that plate, but decided to pick up another one instead. There are some beauties that have been popping up lately. Are you going to try printing from it?
