2013 $1 Mor Coin ... Wrong Colour? - Coin Community Forum

coaster Pillar of the Community Australia 1365 Posts	Posted 09/27/2020 05:33 am I found this coin in the reject bin of the bank's coin deposit machine. At first glance I thought it was a 2c coin that had been discarded but was surprised to find that it was actually a $1 coin. (I've included another coin for comparison) I've never come across this before ...has anyone else, or does anyone have an idea as to what might have caused this? Report this Post to the Staff

Sap Moderator Australia 16857 Posts	Posted 09/27/2020 7:14 pm Environmental damage, would be my guess. Perhaps sitting in a chlorinated swimming pool for a long time? Or maybe ammonia - I've never tried dunking an aluminium-bronze coin in concentrated ammonia to see what colour it changed to, but bronze coins turn orange. I doubt it's a mint error. It looks circulated; very few people would "circulate" a coin that looked that different to a normal $1. Sap Moderator Australia 16857 Posts	Posted 09/28/2020 11:40 pm Nope, wasn't ammonia. Just did a quick check in the lab and ammonia makes an AlBr coin turn slightly less yellow. It is most likely enviromental damgage thou.,there is another thread on here somewhere with a similar Coin. I have seen similar discoloration from Coins sitting under floor mats in a car,bit of moisture and the Patina changes, affected by the carpet or rubber mats.
