5.6 Gram Wash Quaters (Clad) - Coin Community Forum

manos73 New Member United States 36 Posts	Posted 12/01/2008 7:45 pm I just ran $150 through a coinstar and I had 3 clad washington's that wouldn't take. I came home and they're all 5.6 grams (instead of 5.7). They are 1965, 1967 and 1974. They appear normal, with average wear. Any ideas why they're light? Thanks, Manos Report this Post to the Staff

KurtS Pillar of the Community United States 5318 Posts	Posted 12/01/2008 8:10 pm Using an accurate jeweler's scale on some quarters here, I see a variance between 5.6-5.71gr. 0.1 gram isn't much difference; equal to a half-carat by weight. I've measured bronze LMCs between 3.05-3.24gr. Report this Post to the Staff

Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 12/02/2008 2:01 pm They aren't really light. Spec for a clad quarter is 5.67 grams. If you weigh one of that weight on a scale accurate to .1 grams it will read 5.7 grams. If it was .03 grams light then the scale would read 5.6 grams. Tolerance for the quarter is .227 grams so a coin weighing 5.443 grams would still be of legal weight. Quote: hmm... Check the reeding.
