Are talking about the shadow above the mintmark? That is not a RPM. Nothing like that listed this year. Or are talking above above the top of the mintmark? I don't see anything inside the lower base of mintmark. A RPM will be raised above the fields. If not, its just a stain. Hey coop. Got a new computer and trying to figure out the arrows function. I was at least able to circle the area in question for reference. Thanks.  |

That "ghost" D looks much larger than a regular mintmark size.  |

A couple new photos taken at different (lower) angles may help.

This is definitely odd thus being the reason I posted it. I understand the shape of the 'extra' D is relatively thinner and looks different than the mint mark on this coin. I feel I can see what looks like a well defined raised D above the mint mark.
Coop, to answer your question: I take my pics with an iPhone XR, and when needing a closeup, I use a Belomo 10x or 12x loupe held tight up to the lens. I then use the picture/photo edit function on my iPhone to do my best to better enhance the pictures I took if needed. Nothing in these photos was edited and the lighting was not the best I'll admit. It's not the best set-up but it produces some decent photos. I need to look into using Photoshop I suppose but still trying to learn this new computer..........

Looks level to the fields. The die flow lines are attracting all the attention. This has happened before. 1980--D cent:  Thought to be a D/S. debunked later when an earlier die state proved that the fresh die didn't have that feature, but developed with die aging with die flow lines. Edited by coop

Sorry for the delay in responding with another picture at a lower angle showing a raised surface. I just lost the last two hours of my life trying to hold a phone and a loupe at the same time while trying to press the screen to take a pic..... The pics I did take were absolutely horrid and do not show a good discernible lower angle image of what I can actually see with my loupe and coin in hand. To post anymore pics right now would be pretty futile as I know they would be ridiculously hard to decipher. Thank you all for any replies and info you supplied. If I am able to come about a better way to take a good photo I may possibly re-open this thread. Thanks!
