Environmental damage.
Try rubbing the surface and see if any of it comes off.

I just rubbed both sides and rim pretty hard with tissue paper and nothing rubbed off

A lot of so-called Black Beauties are created by heating them until they imitate that color . Your Nickel is not genuine . But genuine BB's do exist for 1959-P Jefferson nickels and a couple of other early dates .  |

I actually had not heard of these, black beauties. For years I simply thought it a reference to the actual buffalo with the namesake used for the Indian Head nickel reverse. But I have seen these over my many years of collecting, assuming them to just be from environmental conditions reacting to the metal.

Well dang...I definitely wouldn't waste my time trying to make one and pass it off to the SEASONED EYES of the Community. Especially Ole COOP, I never held or seen a BB in person and this coin was in my change. Definitely closest thing I've had to pics and videos on the web. SO I gave it a try and all the first views with no replies got my hopes up cause I usually get shot down quick with expert information and facts. QUESTION...How do Ya'll know the first 1959 BB s weren't cooked in a oven for fun? It's a pretty slim category,type, and or coin denomination all in one.

Chances are it is not a BB,but I did buy it only because of the sellers rep. Also,it does look a lot nicer in hand. John1 |
