DouglasFir Valued Member Canada 160 Posts	Posted 08/03/2021 6:13 pm What causes a coin to have its rim "cupped" like this? this coin is much thicker than usual as well. Yes, it's pretty dinged up. I am not thinking it's worth much, but I'm very interested in learning what causes this. Is this called a thick planchet? Just curious here... Report this Post to the Staff

kbbpll Pillar of the Community United States 4233 Posts	Posted 08/07/2021 8:34 pm I think it's spooned, because the coin isn't round anymore. I wouldn't think something rotational like a dryer would flatten the shape like I see between 12-3:00 on the reverse. It's also from the era where I perceive spooning to have been popular - Wickerman is seen spooning a coin in the movie Cool Hand Luke, which is set in the early 1950s. Report this Post to the Staff
