Excellent!

Currently so many coins have a more exciting reverse that the Obverse is relegated to the back of the slab with the Reverse taking front stage. All 3 of the major TPG's now do this.
It makes sense they would. As commems said above, "All bets have been off, however, since the Statehood Quarter's Program was launched in 1999." I cannot imagine anyone ever putting these quarter or dollar program coins in their albums with the common side showing.

I have always felt that the obverse had the date, not counting recent quarters.

For me, the denomination would be on the reverse.

Kudos to you commems for the follow-up thread - fascinating that there are so many classic commemorative where the Mint and the collecting market disagree on the obverse vs reverse.

I was familiar with the distinction on a few of the examples you shared. The one most surprising to me is the Connecticut half. Henry Kreis fabulous art-deco eagle aside - who would ever consider the Charter Oak side to not be the obverse?

By popular demand - OK, at the suggestion of two

I'm thrilled that you acted upon the suggestion. This was a great read and opened my eyes to some examples that I had never considered. Many thanks for sharing all of your knowledge.

As always, beliefs/opinions are fine, but they don't override the facts - there are multiple exceptions to the traditional conventions within the classic US commemorative coin series.

Designs and Styles have Certainly changed. IMO There are No more detailed, More Intricate Eye grabbing Artwork from the Classic Era Commemoratives, Thanks Commems, You've done it Again...... The Charter Oak, The Oregon Trail, Arkansas, Wisconsin, as they should be, Classic Coin designs.

I missed this one the first time around; thanks for the bump, Dearborn.

The traditional convention - not law - for US coins has been that the date is found on the obverse and the denomination is on the reverse.

And then to really throw a wrench into things, some brain trust decided it would be a good idea to put dates on the edge of some coins, so occasionally I wish it were law, along with the required location of the mint mark.

so would that make the edge the 'obverse' on edge dated/Mintmarked coins?

I am still looking for a PCGS graded Oregon Trail Half with the reverse (Wagon) showing upfront. Let me know if you see any in the wild.

@hvacfreak: Welcome to CCF!

Thanks for posting your commemorative coins. Congrats on the additions to your collection! The Oregon Trail piece is definitely one of the most popular designs of the classic series.

It's nice to read of your wife's active engagement!

You might get a more active response over in the Post Your galleries - there's a "Latest Acquisition" thread there.
