I was searching through all my coins and found the coins my grandfather gave me before I ever started collecting coins at all and I figured I would share them with you. be prepared there are alot of coins and alot of pictures going to be on here so if its to much please let me know and accept my appology in advance. I just noticed all the interest in lincoln cents on this board and some interest in other coinage he had given me. None are spectacular but they are still special because they are the coins that lit the fire under by behind and started gradually getting into this hobby because of these few coins thats probably worth nothing. But here they are hope you enjoy them

those are some very pretty coins. especially the 1961 proof franklin. and its always nice to have an unopened mint set from the silver years. never know what ya might find in it. sometimes its best not to open though. hard choice if you ask me lol. Ive never seen a 20th century dollar holder like that. who made it? very nice set. so all around a beautiful set of lovely coins.

Like I said I know there is nothing special there except maybe the 1881 5 dollar gold peice and even that may not be worth much but its just the coins that started my quest of what seems to be a long journey of coin collecting.

Hi Bryan

You know I have to disagree about there being nothing special in this list of coins,, perhaps from a pure Numismatic view, the dates and condiition of some,, but in reality these coins carry a legacy from your GrandFather, in this they are priceless, and beyond any value that money can buy !!

Nice collection ,, coins that would never leave my collection if they were mine !!

Rick

I have to agree 100% on that. Not everything is all about money (no pun intended) in my opinion sentimental value always beats monetary value. I would hold on to them and base my collection around them kinda like the foundation to building a house. Your grandfather left you many nice coins.

Great answer RICK!!! I have a set unc. Bicentennial Coins I bought for my Grandfather in 1976 which basically have no value. A dealer put them in a Capital holder and my Grandfather kept them displayed until he passed away. At that point in time they were returned to me. I wouldn't take anything for those 3 coins at this time and I assume they will handed down when my turn comes to leave this world. It is kind of ironic but I used to buy him a decanter of whiskey, at least for the last few years of his life, and he would hit that whiskey if he was feeling bad ( a shot now and then) as he grew up in a world where a shot of whiskey was a cure for just about everything. He passed in 1985 and the last wildlife decanter I purchased for him (still half full) was given back to me and to this day I still have it. (still half full) It too will remain with me until my end. Just another way to remind me of what I once had and what I have lost and an effort to preserve the memory of a blessing of my life! The coins you received from your Grandfather have passed on much more than value and to hear you are carrying on with a collection is a tribute to what you have been given!
Rest in Peace

My coins will go to our three children. The oldest son will get most of them, and what's neat is that he is a collector, and his two small children are interested in coin collecting. So, the bottom line is that the coins should stay in the family for at least a couple more generations.
Rest in Peace

Bryan1315, as I stated in another thread, you have been left some real treasures! I love all the coins and pictures and if they were mine I would never part with them.

I still have a well worn Ike dollar my father handed me in the early Seventies. He said as long as I had it, I'd never be broke! He also gave me Half of a two dollar bill that I carried for years and he carried the other half. Sadly, I lost my wallet in the Wisconsin river when the canoe I was in tipped over. After he passed away I inherited the "half" he had kept.

I did the same thing with my Daughter in 1988 with a one dollar bill. We each still have our "half" dollars! Thanks for posting these wonderful keepsakes. Mike

My first coin is still with me!
It will never be sold, lost or traded, not even for 1 Grande!
