I find it really difficult to have any respect for a seller that can call this coin XF.

http://cgi.ebay.com/SCARCE-DENMARK-...XF_W0QQitemZ a href= https://www.coincommunity.com/go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/300291558759 target= _blank rel= nofollow 300291558759 /a QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item a href= https://www.coincommunity.com/go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/300291558759 target= _blank rel= nofollow 300291558759 /a &_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:4%7C65:3%7C39:1%7C240:1318

But perhaps XF stands for something else in Latvia because he also state the condition as being circulated.

Am I misunderstanding something here?

I am not familiar at all with Danish coins, but the grade of XF is typically used as a higher end circulated grade. Typically, a coin in XF grade will have most of the detail still visible on it but show some light wear across the entire surface of the coin.

I am not sure what would qualify this particular coin as XF but it doesn't seem obviously overgraded to me.

XF is a circulated coin. Lightly but still circulated. Though I wouldn't call this an XF..

This coin from the same series was bought at an auction house specialised in coins and stamps.

They graded it XF

Front
To-Be-XF-Or-Not

Back
To-Be-XF-Or-Not

Look at all the details. This coin shows no sign of circulation

This is about what is expected in DK of an XF.

Here in the US a coin like that would receive an AU grade at a minimum - i.e. AU-58 - almost uncirculated. If it was truly uncirculated - showed NO signs of circulation, it would receive an MS grade such as MS-62 or MS-64.

Perhaps it is a difference in meanings across borders.

Seeing a fully detailed coin now, I would have to say the one in the ebay link is probably a Fine at best, definitely nowhere near Extremely Fine.

In England that coin would grade as Fine at most also. However XF (or EF) is not uncirculated here.

"There's something rotten..." in that XF grade. It's not just the wear, but all those scratches in the fields.
But of course on ebay people make up any "grade" that suits them best. The other coin is nice!

That's what it comes down to. You should see some of the junk I've seen people call "uncirculated"! It's just disgraceful.
