Hi everyone, I've been reading a lot about variety coins vs error coins. To me, the concepts are almost the same. Can anyone please tell me how to distinguish the two? Perhaps a simple example would help. Thank you!
Too keep it simple without going into too much detail, A variety is a difference in the striking dies. Things like a Double Die, Repunched Dates, different fonts in the same year are varieties. For example the 1966 Dollar Large Bead and Small Bead are varieties. An error is usually a one time event that occurs during the striking of the coins so there are only certain things that can be a true error. .An example would be an off centre strike as this happened when the coin was struck. A good guide for types of errors is error-ref. com
